6 Tips to Finding a Apartment In New York City



1) Time is important factor in looking for your apartment in NYC, it takes time to find your new home. Try to clear of you schedule to have a couple of hours to find your apartment. Find one broker to work with you in the process, you  do not need to make several appointments with different brokers. One broker can show you all of what you need. 

2) Share with your broker about what you are seeking in a new apartment,  that way they can prepare with apartments that fit your specific criteria. For example: Washer & Dryer in the apartment or building? Do you want to be close to the train? Within how many blocks do you want to be to the train ? Do you need a one bedroom or an two? Which areas do you want to look in ? What is your budget?  Do you need tons of natural light? Have a minimum square footage requirement? Must be pet friendly? Are you seeking no fee or fee apartment ask your broker the difference?  Do you need help figuring out all of it find a great broker to assist you and discuss the details upfront set up a meeting. 


3)  Focus on what is best for you and your situation, figure out if you want to be walking distance from you job, or school, look at the area of your choice, ask you self do you want a walk up or elevator building, let your broker guide you in the process of finding the right home.


4) Share with your  broker what you have already seen. Keep track of all the apartments you seen give the addresses of past places so that they do not waste your time looking at spaces  you apartments you’ve already viewed.

5) Tell them up front you will not tolerate being stood up or being late. Let them know that if they are, they shouldn’t expect you to refer them to anyone else.

6) Have all your paper work ready – Fill out the application, pay the application fee,  (first, security and any fee you might pay), a letter from your employer,or School Acceptance letter ,  last two months of pay stubs and be ready for giving your information (SSN) for a credit check.
